Acupuncture for headaches

Headaches are one of the most common reasons people visit a doctor. A headache is a pain in any part of the head, including the scalp, upper neck, face, and interior of the head. Headaches interfere with the ability to work and do daily tasks.

Although headaches can be painful and distressing, they are rarely due to any serious pathology and are called Primary headaches. There are various terminologies used for specific headaches but the most common are migraine, tension-type headaches, and cluster headaches. Also, studies have shown that excessive painkillers can cause more headaches when used on a long-term basis (medication overuse headaches).

Acupuncture is proven to be a safe and very effective therapy in treating numerous types of headaches and is also used to prevent recurrent headaches in case of chronic conditions.

Acupuncture is increasingly viewed as a mainstream treatment for migraine and tension headache and approved by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, UK (NICE), the UK organisation which
provides national guidance to improve health and social care.

Consider a course of up to 10 sessions of acupuncture over 5 to 8 weeks for the prophylactic treatment
of chronic tension-type headaches and migraines.
